Dr. Shafer joins the Million Waves Project to bring medical expertise to 3D printing prostheses

Dr. Shafer, board certified Orthopedic Surgeon has accepted the position of Associate Director and Medical Liaison on the board of the Million Waves Project, an Anacortes non-profit. The Million Waves Project reclaims ocean plastic and turns it into 3D printed prostheses for upper limb different youth around the world.

“The mission of Million Waves is right up my alley, both personally and professionally” said Shafer, “It brings together my love of the ocean and my expertise in upper extremities in a way that makes a positive impact in both areas.”

Shafer will be acting as the Medical Liaison to families as well as working on 3D printing prostheses himself. With over 40 million people in the developing world in need of prostheses and only 5% having access, 3D printing is an affordable way to help kids who may grow out of expensive prostheses quickly. A prostheses can be printed for under $100 and give a child both physical and psychological freedom.
